They did it! With a 46-45 victory over Occidental, Caltech's men's basketball team has won its first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SCIAC) game since the 1984-1985 season, breaking its 310-game losing streak.

Caltech Basketball: The Season Finale

If you haven't been to a Caltech basketball game this season, tonight is your last chance. Come cheer on your Caltech Beavers in their final contest of the season, as the men's and women's teams face Occidental in Braun Gym. With the pep band in full force for Senior Night, the women will tip off at 5:30 p.m.; the men start at 7:30 p.m. Between the games, Caltech Dining will serve dessert: cherry crisp topped with a chocolate beaver.

To the Caltech community, As many of you know, one of our own—Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail—has been in Cairo for the past two weeks. In a phone conversation I had with Ahmed this weekend, he said, "It is exhilarating to be part of this historic transition, to watch the emotions and joy of the Egyptian people, and to be able to give back in any way I can; it is a defining experience in one's lifetime."

In the final dual meets of the regular season, the Caltech fencing teams took on some the nations best at the Northwestern Duals. Going against several NCAA Division I schools, the Beavers brought home victories and qualified individuals for the NCAA West Regionals the first weekend of March.

Elmquist Named to Academic All-District VIII Team

Caltech senior Ryan Elmquist has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII college level men's basketball first team. He is the first men's basketball player in Caltech history to earn the prestigious honor. The native of Woodbury, Minnesota, has tallied a 3.5 GPA as a computer science major at Caltech. He also recently accepted a full-time position as a software engineer with Google for after his graduation in June.
