Caltech-Occidental Band Preps for Trip to China

Kathy Svitil

For the Caltech-Occidental Concert Band, international adventure began with an email. "I got an email from a tour agency in Canada, offering the band a chance to go to China"—and to perform at the Great Wall—recounts William Bing, director of bands at Caltech. The impossible-to-ignore price? Far less than the band's 2008 trip to play at Carnegie Hall. Lori Oliwenstein

But if you're a Doctor Who fan, the only thing you wondered was who put the TARDIS up there, and why. Wonder no more. Less prank than homage to the BBC television program, the TARDIS is the result of a rare joint effort by students from Caltech and MIT.

Looking Back at the Great Rose Bowl Hoax

Allison Benter

Fifty years ago, Washington Huskies fans at the 1961 Rose Bowl game between the Huskies and the Minnesota Golden Gophers received instructions to take colored flip-cards off their seats and hold them above their heads, producing gigantic images for the millions of fans watching on TV. One pattern was meant to spell "Huskies," another to reveal a picture of said dog. But one of the images curiously appeared to be a creature with buck teeth and round ears, and then the cards spelled out an even bigger surprise: "CALTECH."
