Oil Expert To Address Theory That Peak Oil Has Arrived

Princeton University emeritus professor and renowned oil analyst Ken Deffeyes thinks that the all-time production peak for petroleum, or "peak oil," will occur on or around this Thanksgiving. He will discuss the evidence supporting his theory at the Lauritsen Memorial Lecture, to take place at 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, in Beckman Auditorium on the California Institute of Technology campus.

Watson Lecture: Marvelous Mars Rovers

Spirit and Opportunity, the unflappable exploration rovers, have each spent over 600 days trekking across the surface of Mars--more than 500 days longer than either was expected to last. "The rovers have done much more than we ever hoped they would," says geologist Joy A. Crisp of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, the lead scientist for the rover project at JPL. "Although they've passed their warranty, Spirit and Opportunity could keep on going for years," Crisp says.

The two rovers in a couple of months will celebrate their second anniversary on the red planet, even though their original missions were only 90 days.
