Long-term Financial Planning for Your Child's Education

David Levy, California Institute of Technology director of financial aid, along with Catherine Thomas, associate dean of admissions and financial aid at the University of Southern California, will host a free seminar entitled "Planning for Your Child's Educational Future." The seminar will take place on Saturday, November 6, 10 a.m. to noon, at Verdugo Hills Hospital, 1812 Verdugo Boulevard, 4th floor Council Room, in Glendale.

Caltech Launches New Information Initiative

The California Institute of Technology has launched a university-wide initiative called Information Science and Technology (IST)--drawing back the curtain on the nature of information itself and redefining the way we approach, understand, and use science and engineering. IST will cut across disciplines, eventually involving over 25 percent of all faculty and nearly 35 percent of students on campus, likely altering the Institute's intellectual and organizational landscape.

Thanks to a $13,254,000 grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Caltech has established the Tectonic Observatory, under the direction of Avouac, with the ultimate goal, he says, of "providing a new view of how and why the earth's crust is deforming over timescales ranging from a few tens of seconds, the typical duration of an earthquake, to several tens of million of years."

Distinguished Panel to Discuss Science and Current Policy in a Pre-election Dialogue

California Institute of Technology and Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientists will participate in a forum to discuss the relationship between science and public policy, in an event hosted by the Social Activism Speaker Series in conjunction with the Union of Concerned Scientists and ScienceInPolicy.org. The panel includes Caltech president and Nobel laureate David Baltimore; Caltech vice provost and professor of physics David Goodstein; Caltech professor of environmental science and engineering Janet Hering; and JPL research scientist Ashwin Vasavada. This event will take place on Wednesday, October 20, at 7 p.m., in Ramo Auditorium at Caltech. It is free and open to the public.

Economist and noted author Chuck Collins will come to the California Institute of Technology to present the first keynote address in the 2004-05 season of the Social Activism Speaker Series. Cofounder of United for a Fair Economy, Collins will discuss the growing inequality of wealth in the U.S., its impact on the economy, and its role in the upcoming presidential election. This event will take place on Thursday, October 14, at 7 p.m., in Baxter Auditorium, which is located on the Caltech campus. It is free and open to the public.

NSF Awards $6.75 Million to Caltech for Geodynamics Computational Facility

The National Science Foundation has awarded $6.75 million to the California Institute of Technology to house the central activities of a major new community-based, software engineering effort to revolutionize scientific computing in geophysics. The NSF initiative, which will involve at least 24 other American universities and research institutions and four foreign affiliates, is intended to allow scientists studying such fields as seismology, plate tectonics, volcanism, and geomagnetism to take full advantage of recent advances and extraordinary opportunities available in scientific computation.
