How an Idea Becomes a Business

Sure, that lab breakthrough has impressed your colleagues and won you a MacArthur; but how do you turn it into something people will queue up to buy? "it won't sell itself," insists visiting professor of mechanical engineering Ken Pickar. In his course Entrepreneurial Development, Caltech students learn what goes into starting up a start-up. "'If you build it, they will come'? Hardly. First you identify your markets, assess risks, and strategize. Begin to build a great company. Then maybe they'll come."

Engineering Design Competition: "Extreme Recycling"

Congratulations to Chris Hallacy, Brad Saund, and Janet Chen for their victory March 8 in the 26th annual ME 72 engineering design competition. This year's theme: "Extreme Recycling." The mission: Design, build, and deploy two vehicles and traverse difficult terrain (water, sand, rocks, and wood chips, with one type of terrain in each of four different 6' x 10' boxes) to collect plastic water bottles, aluminum cans, and steel cans.

Since birth, Misha Raffiee has stood out among her peers. By the age of two, she was reading. At 11 she was speaking five languages, and by 15, she had graduated from a progressive public school designed for profoundly gifted students. Now, at age 16, she is a freshman at Caltech studying chemistry and showcasing her talent as a violinist.

They did it! With a 46-45 victory over Occidental, Caltech's men's basketball team has won its first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SCIAC) game since the 1984-1985 season, breaking its 310-game losing streak.

Caltech Basketball: The Season Finale

If you haven't been to a Caltech basketball game this season, tonight is your last chance. Come cheer on your Caltech Beavers in their final contest of the season, as the men's and women's teams face Occidental in Braun Gym. With the pep band in full force for Senior Night, the women will tip off at 5:30 p.m.; the men start at 7:30 p.m. Between the games, Caltech Dining will serve dessert: cherry crisp topped with a chocolate beaver.

In the final dual meets of the regular season, the Caltech fencing teams took on some the nations best at the Northwestern Duals. Going against several NCAA Division I schools, the Beavers brought home victories and qualified individuals for the NCAA West Regionals the first weekend of March.
