Caltech Helps Students Afford College

The California Institute of Technology will eliminate loans for its neediest undergraduate students by replacing loans with additional gift aid, such as scholarships and grants. Beginning with undergraduates entering in the fall of 2008, most domestic students whose total family incomes are $60,000 per year or less will be offered a financial-aid package that substitutes scholarship gift aid for loans.

Student Selected as Rhodes Scholar

The Rhodes Trust has announced that Todd Gingrich, a California Institute of Technology senior chemistry major, has been named a Rhodes Scholar. The scholarship covers all expenses at Oxford University in England, where he plans to earn a master's degree in theoretical chemistry.

Cable television started making people over in shows like Fashion Emergency, MTV Made, What Not to Wear, and Beauty and the Geek--all showing young Americans the importance of looking professional and fashionable for a variety of occasions. If one visits the California Institute of Technology campus during recruiting season, it will be obvious that many students don't watch enough cable TV.

It all started last fall, in a classroom at Caltech. A team of students in Visiting Professor of Mechanical Engineering Ken Pickar's course, Product Design for the Developing World, decided to create wheelchairs for people in developing countries that could tackle the rugged terrain. With two bicycles and three creative brains contributing, the project took off.
