Casta Paintings: A Colonial Caste System Past and Present

Casta paintings is an artistic genre depicting miscegenation within Spanish colonies. These eighteenth-century images memorialized the racial classification system that structured colonial society. We will explore how the racial hierarchy represented in Casta paintings remains a shaping power of social order in Latin America.
