Activists to Speak at Caltech on U.S./Mexico Border Maquiladora Issues

PASADENA, Calif.--Maquiladora workers and activists Enrique Davalos and Rogelio Valencia will speak on "Maquiladoras: Impacts of Globalization on the U.S./Mexico Border Communities" at the California Institute of Technology on Friday, October 20 at 7:30 p.m., in Baxter Lecture Hall. This presentation will begin the 2006-07 season of the Caltech Y Social Activism Speaker Series. The event is free and open to the public. No reservations or tickets are required.

Davalos and Valencia, along with other colleagues who work at the maquiladoras, or export assembly factories, at the Mexican border, are activists at the Centro de Información para Trabajadoras y Trabajadores (The Workers' Information Center) in Tijuana and at the San Diego Maquiladora Workers' Solidarity Network. Together, they work to educate and promote awareness about the maquiladoras and workers, the impact of globalization on their border communities, and other issues affecting the workers, such as gender, labor, health, trade, human rights, housing, and social and environmental justice.

The Centro de Información is a nongovernmental advocacy organization of women and men from Baja California, Mexico, that concentrates on supporting workers' rights within the maquiladoras.

The San Diego Maquiladora Workers' Solidarity Network is a binational effort to support the struggle of Mexican workers in Baja California. Their mission is to promote the binational solidarity and communication between San Diego and Baja California workers.

This event is part of the Witness for Peace Southwest Mexico/Border Speaker Tour in the greater Los Angeles area and is brought to the Caltech community by the Caltech Y's Social Activism Speaker Series in collaboration with Witness for Peace Southwest.

The Social Activism Speaker Series is a Caltech student organization that focuses attention on current social and political issues by inviting prominent activists to share their experiences and perspectives with the Caltech community and the public. This student-run series is coordinated with the help of the Caltech Y and is made possible by contributions from the Moore and Hufstedler funds, Student Affairs, Campus Life, the Alumni Association, the Graduate Student Council, and the Associated Students of Caltech.

Baxter Lecture Hall is located near the center of the Caltech campus. The auditorium is on the third floor of Baxter Hall and is accessible via the stairs in the south end of the building. Parking is available in the lots south of Del Mar Boulevard between Wilson and Chester avenues; in the Holliston Avenue parking structure between Del Mar Boulevard and San Pasqual Street; or in the Wilson Avenue parking structures between San Pasqual Street and Del Mar Boulevard.
