Caltech Bands to Jazz It Up on Campus Friday

PASADENA, Calif.—The annual winter Caltech Jazz Band Concert this year will feature the swinging sounds of New Orleans and the big-band sounds of some of the Los Angeles area's finest composers. The free concert is open to the public and will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, January 20, in Beckman Auditorium on the campus of the California Institute of Technology.

The jazz bands are under the direction of William Bing, who is also director of bands and artist in residence at Caltech, as well as professor of trumpet at California State University Northridge.

According to Bing, the music this year will include arrangements by local composers such as Bill Holman, Matt Harris, and Pasadena resident Bruce Lofgren. Caltech graduate Les Deutsch, who now works at JPL, will play solo piano as part of the "music of New Orleans" portion of the program.

Beckman Auditorium is located near Del Mar Boulevard on the Caltech campus. Free parking is available in the lots south of Del Mar Boulevard between Wilson and Chester Avenues, and in the Wilson Avenue and Holliston Avenue parking structures between San Pasqual Street and Del Mar Boulevard.
