How to Get Fuel from Sunlight and Water

PASADENA, Calif. - At this time of drastically fluctuating gas prices, alternatives to today's fuels are welcome. But how far away are these new solutions? Dr. Harry B. Gray, Arnold O. Beckman Professor of Chemistry and founding director of the Beckman Institute at the California Institute of Technology, will answer this question in "The Future of Chemistry: Fuel from Sunlight and Water," at 4 p.m. on February 4 in Caltech's Beckman Institute Auditorium, 400 S. Wilson Avenue, in Pasadena.

The free presentation is the second in the quarterly Congressional Science Scholar Forum presented by Congressman Adam B. Schiff in conjunction with Caltech. It is open to teachers and students focusing on math and science in local high schools, Glendale Community College, and Pasadena City College.

The forum is intended to give students the chance to learn about opportunities in math and science from the personalized view of a Caltech researcher. Series topic span physics, biology, chemistry, and math.

Gray's interactive discussion will help students understand what big questions in chemistry remain unanswered, such as how to use chemistry to solve the shrinking supply of natural energy resources, how to mimic nature's ability to harness sunlight for useful purposes, and how to understand the molecular basis of protein interactions in an effort to design better drug therapies. An accomplished and inspiring researcher, Gray will encourage the students to contemplate their roles in finding the answers to these questions and to understand how chemistry relates to the future of the planet as a whole.
