A Message from Jean-Lou Chameau

To the Caltech community,

As many of you know, one of our own—Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail—has been in Cairo for the past two weeks. In a phone conversation I had with Ahmed this weekend, he said, "It is exhilarating to be part of this historic transition, to watch the emotions and joy of the Egyptian people, and to be able to give back in any way I can; it is a defining experience in one's lifetime."

During this time of transition in Egypt, I am sure you join me in supporting Ahmed in his commitment to his home country. His many accomplishments in the scientific arena have had a profound impact on Caltech and generations of young people. On many occasions, Ahmed's sage counsel has aided many members of the Caltech community, including me and several of my predecessors.  There is no doubt that his guidance will now help shape the future of Egypt. In a world where scientific and technological advancement is so critical, Egypt will benefit immensely from the leadership of one of the greatest scientists of our time.

Ahmed's contributions to science, society, Caltech, and now Egypt embody the leadership and vision for which Caltech is known. We at Caltech wish Ahmed—and all Egyptians—the strength and wisdom to move through the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Yours in discovery,

Jean-Lou
