Milton Chang, Laser Expert and Venture Capitalist, Elected to Caltech Board of Trustees

PASADENA, Calif.--Dr. Milton Chang, managing director of Incubic, a venture capital fund in Mountain View, California, has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the California Institute of Technology. The announcement was made by David Baltimore, president of Caltech.

Chang is a Caltech alumnus with a doctorate in electrical engineering, and has spent the last 36 years in various executive capacities. He has distinguished himself as an entrepreneur, an executive, and an investor in numerous successful technology companies.

After earning his doctorate in 1969, he joined Northrop as a research engineer. From 1971 to 1988, he was vice president, and later president and CEO of Newport Corporation. From 1990 to 2000 he was president, CEO, and until 2001, chairman of New Focus Inc., and in 2000 cofounded Incubic to expand his venture activities.

Chang received a Distinguished Alumni Award from Caltech in 2002, and was also named a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Illinois, from which he received his bachelor's degree in 1964. He is also the recipient of the Arthur Schawlow Medal from the Laser Institute of America, the George Goddard Award from the International Society for Optical Engineering, and the Excellence in Photonics Award from Laurin Publishing.

A former president of the Lasers & Electro-Optics Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Chang is a fellow of the Optical Society of America and the Laser Institute of America. He has also served on the Naval Research Advisory Committee Venture Panel and the Visiting Committee of the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Chang is a member of the Committee of 100, an association of Chinese Americans who are leaders in their fields.

He writes monthly business columns for the magazines Laser Focus World and Photonics Spectra.
