Three Students Awarded Goldwater Scholarships

PASADENA, Calif.--Three students from the California Institute of Technology have been awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year, and one student received honorable mention.

Kevin Chen, a junior aeronautics major from Irvine, California, Fedor Manin, a junior mathematics major from Palo Alto, California, and Christina Theodoris, a junior biology major from Alpharetta, Georgia, are among this year's recipients. Sophomore ZeNan Chang, a biology major from Santa Monica, California, received honorable mention.

The scholarship program, honoring the late Senator Barry M. Goldwater, is designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is considered one of the premier undergraduate awards of its type in these fields.

This year the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awarded a total of 321 academic merit scholarships to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from across the nation. The recipients were chosen from 1,035 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency. The foundation, in its 22-year history, has awarded 5,523 scholarships worth approximately $54 million.
