The Effects of Media and Marketing on Children

Are children really negatively influenced by television, commercials, and the media? Dr. Susan Linn, Ed.D., cofounder of the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and author of Consuming Kids: The Hostile Takeover of Childhood, will speak about the effects of media and commercial marketing on children. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 13, at 8 p.m., at the California Institute of Technology Ramo Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations are required.

The event will take place in Braun Athletic Center, near the corner of Wilson Avenue and California Boulevard, starting with a public reception at 4 p.m., followed by the presentation from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Distinguished Panel to Discuss Science and Current Policy in a Pre-election Dialogue

California Institute of Technology and Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientists will participate in a forum to discuss the relationship between science and public policy, in an event hosted by the Social Activism Speaker Series in conjunction with the Union of Concerned Scientists and ScienceInPolicy.org. The panel includes Caltech president and Nobel laureate David Baltimore; Caltech vice provost and professor of physics David Goodstein; Caltech professor of environmental science and engineering Janet Hering; and JPL research scientist Ashwin Vasavada. This event will take place on Wednesday, October 20, at 7 p.m., in Ramo Auditorium at Caltech. It is free and open to the public.
