Economist to Speak on the Growing Wealth Gap

Economist and noted author Chuck Collins will come to the California Institute of Technology to present the first keynote address in the 2004-05 season of the Social Activism Speaker Series. Cofounder of United for a Fair Economy, Collins will discuss the growing inequality of wealth in the U.S., its impact on the economy, and its role in the upcoming presidential election. This event will take place on Thursday, October 14, at 7 p.m., in Baxter Auditorium, which is located on the Caltech campus. It is free and open to the public.

Inaugural Wouk Lecture on Advanced Technology for Space Exploration

Erik Antonsson, the chief technologist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a professor of mechanical engineering at the California Institute of Technology, will give the inaugural Victor Wouk Lecture at 4 p.m. May 19 in Lees-Kubota Lecture Hall, 101 Guggenheim Laboratory of Aeronautics and Applied Science on the Caltech campus. Antonsson will discuss "Advanced Technology for Space Exploration" and will provide an overview of the JPL Strategic Technology Plan, along with highlights of recent successes and future missions. A wine and cheese reception will follow. The program is free and open to the public.

Human Rights Activist and Actor Mike Farrell Comes to Caltech

Human rights advocate and actor Mike Farrell will come to Caltech to present the final address in the 2003-2004 season of the Social Activism Speaker Series at the California Institute of Technology. Well known for playing B. J. Hunnicutt in the popular television show M.A.S.H., Farrell has spent much of his life campaigning for prisoners' rights and penal reform. Currently president of Death Penalty Focus (DPF), a nonprofit organization, he will speak on his efforts to help end capital punishment. This event will take place on Thursday, May 6, at 8 p.m., in Ramo Auditorium on the Caltech campus. It is free and open to the public.
