The Rose Hills Foundation grants $315,000 to Caltech for undergraduate scholarships

The Rose Hills Foundation of Los Angeles has awarded $315,000 to the California Institute of Technology to fund scholarships for the current and coming academic years. The scholarships will be awarded to juniors and seniors from the San Gabriel Valley who are majoring in the life sciences, natural sciences, or engineering.

Fellowship for Graduate Students Established

Fellowship Program Receives $1 Million Gift

A 1952 Caltech alumnus, Carl Larson, and his wife, Shirley, have contributed $1 million to Caltech's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program. The income from the endowment will be used for students' annual stipends.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded a $25.4 million grant to the California Institute of Technology to establish the Nanoscale Systems Initiative (NSI). The grant will support one of the scientific and technological community's promising research avenues--the creation of extremely tiny devices to augment and in some cases displace the state-of-the-art electronic systems of today.

Caltech Launches New Information Initiative

The California Institute of Technology has launched a university-wide initiative called Information Science and Technology (IST)--drawing back the curtain on the nature of information itself and redefining the way we approach, understand, and use science and engineering. IST will cut across disciplines, eventually involving over 25 percent of all faculty and nearly 35 percent of students on campus, likely altering the Institute's intellectual and organizational landscape.

Observing the Roiling Earth

Thanks to a $13,254,000 grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Caltech has established the Tectonic Observatory, under the direction of Avouac, with the ultimate goal, he says, of "providing a new view of how and why the earth's crust is deforming over timescales ranging from a few tens of seconds, the typical duration of an earthquake, to several tens of million of years."
