The dream of a giant optical telescope to improve our understanding of the universe and its origin has moved a step closer to reality today. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation awarded $17.5 million to fund a detailed design study of the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT). This new grant allows the California Institute of Technology and its partner, the University of California, to proceed with formulating detailed construction plans for the telescope.

National Human Genome Research Institute awards $12 million, five-year grant to "WormBase"

The Caltech-led WormBase project, an ongoing multi-institutional effort to make genetic information on the experimental animal known as C. elegans freely available to the world, has been augmented with a new $12 million grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute. The money will be distributed over five years for ongoing work on the genome database, which since its inception in 2000 has become a major resource for biomedical researchers as well as biologists attempting to better understand individual genes and how they interrelate.

The California Institute of Technology will begin start-up tests on a new $10 million cogeneration facility in July of this year. When fully operational, the new facility will save an additional $2.5 million per year in avoided energy costs above the savings of its predecessor and will reduce overall emissions by 66 percent.
