The world is taking note of the innovative work being done at Caltech—not just in the labs, but also in the unique renovations of our research spaces. The spring issue of Solutions Journal, a magazine of the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), features an in-depth profile of the Linde + Robinson Laboratory, an astronomy facility built in 1932 that has undergone extensive renovations and will be the nation's first LEED Platinum laboratory.

As part of a program to foster innovative biomedical research projects, an anonymous donor has pledged $3 million each to Caltech and City of Hope to strengthen scientific collaborations between the two leading research institutions.

In his third annual Town Hall address to the Caltech community, President Jean-Lou Chameau looked back at the last academic year—from its game-changing research to its streak-ending basketball games—and considered the year to come. 

The top floor of Parsons-Gates is shining a bit brighter lately. It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Board of Trustees has approved my recommendation that Peter B. Dervan, Bren Professor of Chemistry, be appointed Vice President for Development and Institute Relations.  Professor Dervan will serve on an interim basis while we conduct the search for a new vice president for Development and Institute Relations.  

Those fences you'll soon see sprouting up around Jorgensen Laboratory are among the less classic signs of spring—and yet, they are very much a symbol of growth and rebirth. Now that the interior demolition of the building has been completed, with some 90 percent of the materials removed being reused or recycled, Jorgensen Lab's much-anticipated renovation is about to begin in earnest.

A major seismic retrofit to a pipeline that delivers as much as 60 percent of Pasadena's water will require a citywide reduction in water use from Friday, March 18, through Sunday, March 27. To that end, the City of Pasadena has declared a Level 4 Water Shortage Emergency during that time, and will enforce a complete ban on outdoor watering. What steps will the campus take?

Caltech's efforts to finance energy efficiency in ways that give back to the campus have been recognized by the Sustainable Endowments Institute in its recently-released report, Greening the Bottom Line: The Trend toward Green Revolving Funds on Campus.

To the Caltech community, As many of you know, one of our own—Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail—has been in Cairo for the past two weeks. In a phone conversation I had with Ahmed this weekend, he said, "It is exhilarating to be part of this historic transition, to watch the emotions and joy of the Egyptian people, and to be able to give back in any way I can; it is a defining experience in one's lifetime."
