Caltech Appoints VP for Development and Institute Relations

Caltech has named Brian K. Lee as its new vice president for development and institute relations. Lee, who is currently the senior vice president for university advancement at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, will assume his new duties at Caltech on April 1, 2012.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded $6 million to Caltech, UC Berkeley, and University of Washington, Seattle, to create a prototype earthquake early warning system for the Pacific Coast of the United States.

Caltech Awarded $12.6 Million for New Institute for Quantum Information and Matter

Caltech has been awarded $12.6 million in funding over the next five years by the National Science Foundation to create a new Physics Frontiers Center. Dubbed the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter (IQIM), the center will bring physicists and computer scientists together to push theoretical and experimental boundaries in the study of exotic quantum states.

A new school year is underway, and I would like to celebrate some recent milestones reflecting our hard work and devotion to excellence. Caltech is #1! Yesterday we learned that the Institute has been rated as the number one university in the 2011–2012 Times Higher Education global ranking of the top 200 universities, knocking Harvard University out of the top spot for the first time in the survey’s eight-year history.

The Red Door Café looks a bit different these days. The door's still red, but over the summer, its interior received a fresh coast of paint—a lighter shade to brighten up the space.
