Caltech has named Brian K. Lee as its new vice president for development and institute relations. Lee, who is currently the senior vice president for university advancement at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, will assume his new duties at Caltech on April 1, 2012.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has awarded $6 million to Caltech, UC Berkeley, and University of Washington, Seattle, to create a prototype earthquake early warning system for the Pacific Coast of the United States.

This Veterans Day we pause to honor the generations of extraordinary Americans—among them, past and present members of the Caltech community—for their service to our country as part the United States Armed Forces. These women and men are our friends, relatives, neighbors, and colleagues. In a collaborative effort with 32 other leading U.S. institutions, Caltech has helped launch the Billion Dollar Green Challenge, an initiative to invest a cumulative total of one billion dollars to fund energy-efficiency upgrades on campuses across the country.

Caltech has been awarded $12.6 million in funding over the next five years by the National Science Foundation to create a new Physics Frontiers Center. Dubbed the Institute for Quantum Information and Matter (IQIM), the center will bring physicists and computer scientists together to push theoretical and experimental boundaries in the study of exotic quantum states.

In a strategic move to strengthen fundamental science and technology and foster transformational advances in renewable energies, the Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) and Caltech have established a $10 million partnership.

A new school year is underway, and I would like to celebrate some recent milestones reflecting our hard work and devotion to excellence. Caltech is #1! Yesterday we learned that the Institute has been rated as the number one university in the 2011–2012 Times Higher Education global ranking of the top 200 universities, knocking Harvard University out of the top spot for the first time in the survey’s eight-year history.

On Sunday, our nation will mark the 10th anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11. I was reflecting on this milestone, and on the turbulent character of this past decade, when I heard an interview with columnist Tom Friedman on the challenges facing the U.S. right now. 

The Red Door Café looks a bit different these days. The door's still red, but over the summer, its interior received a fresh coast of paint—a lighter shade to brighten up the space. There's new furniture and even a few new menu items, such as strawberry lemonade, fresh-brewed iced tea, and homemade pastries. If you haven't already, come check it out.

The Caltech Y will begin moving into the Tyson House (505 S. Wilson) on Thursday, August 25, and will reopen in the new location on September 6.
